Newtown Pool To Reopen In Early 2010

3.15.01pm GMT Wed 28th Oct 2009

Liberal Democrat cabinet members have announced that Ladywood's only public swimming facility will reopen to the public early next year.

The Newtown swimming pool in Aston ward has been closed since May due to asbestos fears. Structural surveys and £140,000 of restoration work have been ordered to ensure the facility can reopen for the residents of Aston and beyond.

Cllr Martin Mullaney, Birmingham's Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport & Culture, said: "We have an ambitious long-term goal for new community pools across the city but we know the importance of keeping existing facilities open in the meantime.

"I've worked closely with my cabinet colleague, Cllr Ayoub Khan, to secure funding for the repair work and further down the line we can look at plans for a new pool."

Cllr Ayoub Khan, the Liberal Democrat cabinet member for Community Safety and Local Services, welcomed the news.
